When I Am Surrounded By Republicans

When I started going to Oakland University, I just assumed all young people possessed liberal minds and shared the same beliefs and values that I did. Boy, I was wrong! Perhaps, because OU is a campus right in the middle of an affluent area of Michigan, or perhaps because I am surrounded by young individuals obviously still influenced by their mom's and dad's, but in any case I found it rare to find someone else (besides most of the professors) who were openly and proudly liberal.

Now that I am taking mostly Sociology courses, again, I assumed. Again, I was wrong. A lot of social worker and sociology majors speak with conservative minds, which I find appalling. How can you be a conservative social worker? You are being paid to perform a social duty based on a social policy in which a democratic legislator built and fought for? How can you learn about social stratification and still hold true to the Republican party's values? It's mind-boggling.

Yesterday morning, I was sitting in the hall of one the school campus buildings, waiting for my favorite English class to start. A girl sitting next to me, took off her headphones and states allowed, "O my god, you guys, Michigan is finally get smart! They are forcing all welfare recipients to do volunteer work. This means you can;t just sit on her your ass all day and be lazy on your couch."

This is just one of the many examples I could show you to display the narrow-mindedness of the individuals I go to school with. I am a lot older than most of them. Sometimes I think that might be the reason behind their stupidity. However, I know I am feeding myself lies.

All I know is, as a country, America has shifted back and forth between being a majority liberal nation to a majority conservative nation. With the disappointing approvals of President Barack Obama, I wonder if the country will make that shift to the right again. It is certainly a disturbing proclamation.

What do you think?'
