Last week the Apple store released the new iPhone. Masses and swarms of people gathered around Apple stores/Verizon stores/etc., hoping to buy their new phone. Obviously thousands of people truly, deeply care about getting the latest craze, giving into societal standards of what's new, what's cool, what will make you, you.
So if thousands upon thousands of people care about their material possessions, and obviously they care about making more money in order to afford the new material possession--how do we get people to care about stuff that really matters?
I don't know.
How do we get people to stop texting and to take a good look around them: the world and many of its habitants, like animals and people, human beings, who live in wastelands and are at any given moment about to perish--how do we get people to start caring about that?
I watched two videos recently and they have both made me really start to think about the society we live in. One video, from comedian Louis C.K. who was on Conan O'Brien explaining why he won't buy his daughters a cell phone. He said people have become so consumed with their phones, with the texting and what not, that they don't even know how to be alone with themselves. Not even when driving! How many people get into car accidents because of texting while driving?
You can find that video here.
Another video is from a photographer who has worked for National Geographic for over 20 years, capturing dangerous pictures of wild life. He wants to know how he can get people to care about the fact that so many species on this planet are so close to be completely wiped out. Species that are so detrimental to this world. You can find the video here.
So, how do we get people to really care? Is awareness really going to be enough? I barely have 150 friends on facebook, and I can tell you, not one of them seems to care about the newsworthy things I post on there. And this blog? Not one single person has addressed the issues I blog about. I don't know if awareness is enough.
